Sustainable Furniture and Reclaimed Wood: Part 1

Sustainable furniture from reclaimed wood is made from wood that is not taken from living, standing trees, but is gathered from many different sources. Some companies reclaim wood from buildings that are slated for destruction because of their age or structural inefficiencies. Other materials are taken from the forest floor, for example trees that have fallen naturally that may be covered or buried in the earth. When reservoirs are made they sometimes cover entire forests in the low laying areas, and there are companies working to safely remove trees preserved under the water. FSC Certified Sustainable Furniture and Other Products Part 1

The most basic, and one of my favorite, sustainable wood products that made from FSC certified wood is the Woodloops’ wood-stick. There are a few different models offered, but the idea is singular. It is a basic folding ruler, like carpenters use, where each joined piece is made from a different type of sustainable wood from all over the world. On one side it tells a little bit about the species and on the other side the mesuring information is given exactly as it would be on any common ruler.
